아이와 Mocca의 Happy 노래를 듣다가 "Keep your chin up !" 이라는 부분이 계속 맴돌았다.
아이에게 무슨 뜻인지 알겠냐고 물어보니 고개들라는 말이지? 라 해서, 야구시합 졌을 때 해주는 말이라고 해줬다. 기운내~~
Keep your chin down은 역시 반대 의미로 조용히 있어라는 뜻이다.
 
우리나라에도 신체 관련 표현이 많듯이 영어권에서도 신체 관련 관용어가 많다.
뉘앙스는 와닿지만 헷갈리는 신체 관련 영어이디엄을 정리 해보았다.
 

🙂 턱(Chin)

  1. Keep your chin up → 기운 내라
    • Don’t worry, keep your chin up and things will get better.
  2. Take it on the chin → 묵묵히 받아들이다
    • He took it on the chin when his boss criticized him.
  3. Keep your chin down → 눈에 띄지 않게 조용히 지내다
    • Just keep your chin down until things calm down.
  4. Stick your chin out → 위험을 무릅쓰다, 과감히 나서다
    • She stuck her chin out by defending her friend in front of everyone.
  5. Up to the chin in ~ → ~에 푹 빠져 있다
    • I’m up to the chin in work this week.

 

🧠 머리(Head)

  1. Use your head → 머리를 써라
    • Come on, use your head before making that decision.
  2. Keep your head above water → 간신히 버티다
    • After losing his job, he’s just trying to keep his head above water.
  3. Off the top of my head → 바로 떠오르는 대로
    • Off the top of my head, I can think of three possible solutions.
  4. Lose your head → 당황하다
    • Don’t lose your head during the test, just stay calm.
  5. Over someone’s head → 이해하기 어렵다
    • The lecture went over my head, it was too technical.

 

👀 눈(Eye)

  1. Catch someone’s eye → 시선을 끌다
    • That red dress really caught my eye.
  2. In the blink of an eye → 눈 깜짝할 사이에
    • The thief disappeared in the blink of an eye.
  3. See eye to eye → 의견이 일치하다
    • We finally saw eye to eye on the project details.
  4. Keep an eye on → 주의 깊게 지켜보다
    • Can you keep an eye on my bag while I’m gone?
  5. Turn a blind eye → 못 본 척하다
    • The teacher sometimes turns a blind eye to small mistakes.

 

👂 귀(Ear)

  1. Lend an ear → 들어주다
    • She always lends an ear when I need to talk.
  2. Play it by ear → 즉흥적으로 하다
    • Let’s play it by ear and decide later.
  3. Music to my ears → 듣기 좋은 말
    • Your praise was music to my ears.
  4. Fall on deaf ears → 무시당하다
    • His advice fell on deaf ears.
  5. Have an ear for → ~에 감각이 있다
    • She really has an ear for languages.

 

🖐 손(Hand)

  1. Lend a hand → 도와주다
    • Can you lend me a hand with these bags?
  2. In safe hands → 안전하게 맡겨지다
    • Don’t worry, your dog is in safe hands here.
  3. Hands down → 단연코
    • This is hands down the best pizza in town.
  4. On the one hand / On the other hand → 한편으로는 / 다른 한편으로는
    • On the one hand, I like the idea. On the other hand, it’s risky.
  5. Out of hand → 통제 불능의
    • The party got out of hand after midnight.

 

👣 발(Foot)

  1. Get cold feet → 겁먹다
    • He got cold feet before asking her out.
  2. Put your foot down → 단호히 말하다
    • The boss finally put his foot down and ended the argument.
  3. Find your feet → 적응하다
    • It took me a while to find my feet at my new job.
  4. Get off on the wrong foot → 시작이 잘못되다
    • We got off on the wrong foot, but now we’re good friends.
  5. At someone’s feet → 존경하다, 배우다
    • Many students sat at the professor’s feet to learn from him.
